Best yoga mats for grip and comfort
The best yoga mats provide a supportive and grippy surface to help you feel stable and grounded during your practice.
We've tested yoga mats from popular brands, including Lululemon, Liforme, Manduka and more. As well as standard PVC mats, our selection includes a thick yoga mat, yoga mat in a bag and travel yoga mat. See how they compare.
Our yoga testers were impressed with three mats that earned our Best Buy recommendation, one of which is a Great Value pick at under £30.

How we test yoga mats
We choose and buy the bestselling yoga mats available at UK retailers.
Our panel of yogis try a variety of poses on each mat. They rate each mat on the following aspects and choose their favourite:
- Support Our testers assess how supportive each mat is on their wrists, knees and ankles.
- Non-slip When our testers carry out their yoga practice, they rate how stable they feel on each mat. The best mats have a grippy, non-slip surface. The worst cause hands and feet to slide.
- Portability Our testers roll up and walk with the mats to rate how easy they are to carry. We also weigh and measure each yoga mat as an extra measurement. This is something to consider if you're travelling or taking your yoga mat to an exercise class.
- Durability After our testers complete their yoga practice, we assess the mats for any signs of wear and tear.
- Setting up the mat Before starting yoga, our testers check if the mat has rolled out flat or if the edges are turning up.
We regularly revisit the yoga mats on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing and when we find them we do.

What is the best thickness for a yoga mat?
If you regularly use your mat for yoga, you'll want a mat with a thickness of less than 6mm. You'll need enough support to hold trickier balancing poses, but you don't want to feel like you're sinking into a heavily cushioned mat.
Pilates has more bodyweight resistance exercises where you may need extra cushion for your spine, knees and wrists. This requires a thicker yoga mat - for example, the 12mm Maximo Yoga Mat, which we tested.
Are yoga mats a standard size?
You'll have a more comfortable workout if you choose a mat a few inches longer than your height. You should be able to lie on your yoga mat without your head or feet spilling over the edge.
There is a large range of heights available - the yoga mats we tested start from a height of 166cm and go up to 185cm.
How to clean a yoga mat
Whether you're using your mat for low-intensity yoga sessions or fast-paced HIIT workouts, it's worth giving it a wipe-down once your exercise is complete.
During our testing, we sprayed the yoga mats with standard antibacterial spray. We found it quickly soaked into the mat before we could wipe it down with a microfibre cloth.
A better solution is to spray the microfibre cloth and then wipe the mat, so the solution doesn't absorb into the mat.
You can also fill a spray bottle with warm water and a squeeze of washing-up liquid as an alternative cleaning solution.
We test Fairy Liquid against supermarket own labels to find the best washing-up liquids
