Here, we break down the customer ratings for shops selling tools, DIY and decorating supplies. 

Brewers

Top-of-the-table Brewers impresses shoppers with the quality of its products as well as its range and availability. It also gets top marks for customer service. It could do better on value for money, though, where it picks up a fairly mediocre three stars. 

Overall, it's an excellent bet for your painting and decorating needs which is why we've named it a Which? Recommended Provider. 

Dulux Decorator Centre

Dulux Decorator Centre comes joint second in the table, alongside Screwfix. Shoppers love its products and customer service. 

It didn’t qualify for Which? Recommended Provider (WRP) status because of concerns we have over its returns policies – we’ve written to it asking for changes. 

Screwfix

Screwfix does well across the board and particularly stands out for its website and app, which customers find easy to use. 

As with Dulux Decorator Centre, it didn’t qualify for WRP status because of concerns we have over its returns policies – again, we’ve written to it asking for changes. 

Toolstation

Toolstation comes in close behind Dulux Decorator Centre and Screwfix and performs well across the board.

We were so impressed by its combination of excellent customer satisfaction and strong T&Cs that we've named it a WRP. 

Best furniture and homeware shops

When shopping for furniture and homeware, you want to know you're getting decent quality, great aftersales service and first-rate customer service. Find out where you can expect that in the table:

John Lewis

Department store John Lewis stands out from the crowd for furniture and homeware. Shoppers love the quality of what it sells, and give its customer service top marks.

They also rate its delivery, website and app highly, as well as awarding it an impressive five stars for value. It's a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP). 

Bensons for Beds

Shoppers love the quality of the products at Bensons for Beds and also give it top marks for customer service and value for money. 

We've named it a WRP.  

Lakeland

Lakeland wows shoppers with its product quality, customer service, website and app, scoring the maximum five stars across each of these measures. It doesn't drop below four stars on any other front, either.

It passed our retailer terms and conditions check with flying colours, meaning we've named it a WRP. 

ProCook

Cookware specialist ProCook is another WRP, standing out for its product quality and the amount of packaging it uses.

Best household appliance shops

Whether you're looking for a fridge or a vacuum cleaner, you'll find the best shop for the job in the table below. 

Euronics

Top of the table is Euronics, a network of more than 600 independently run stores. These combine the personal service of local experts (many shops have been run by the same family for generations) with the reassurance of an established brand - in fact, Euronics is the largest electrical buying group in Europe. 

Shoppers love the personal (and non-pushy) service offered by its staff, as well as their product knowledge and eye for detail - not to mention the stores' competitive prices.

It did so well we've named it a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP).

Marks Electrical

Marks Electrical is beaten only by Euronics – which is not surprising when you learn it’s a member of the wider Euronics network itself. 

Shoppers love the quality of the appliances it sells and also give it top marks for delivery. It missed out on WRP status, though, because we had concerns with its returns policy. 

John Lewis

Shoppers at John Lewis particularly love the quality of the items it sells and its customer service. It's also named a WRP.

Lakeland

Helpful staff and excellent service are just two of the reasons shoppers pick Lakeland. With its obvious popularity and generous three-year guarantee, it’s not surprising it's also a WRP.

AO.com

AO.com particularly stands out for its deliveries, which customers rate highly. It also offers price matching and seven-day-a-week delivery. It qualifies as a WRP for home appliance purchases.

How the best home and DIY shops stand out

Every year, we survey thousands of Which? members and members of the public about their experiences of shopping with some of the UK's best-known stores and websites, as well as with lesser-known brands. 

Our star ratings reveal how customers rated each retailer on a range of different measures from value for money to aftersales service.

We also name Which? Recommended Providers for each category. Only shops with top customer scores, plus four stars for customer service and delivery plus three stars for value for money can make the grade. WRPs also need to offer at least 28 days to return non-faulty goods. We exclude any retailers that give misleading or unclear information about returns.
