Best bathroom cleaning sprays

The best bathroom cleaners should help you shift soap scum and lift limescale, so we put them to the test
Fran Roberts-ThorntonSenior Researcher/Writer
bathroom cleaning sprays from ecover, method and cif

Bathroom cleaners help remove soap scum and stains that aren't washed down our drains. Nobody wants to get clean in a dirty shower cubicle, and stubborn limescale can mar an otherwise sparkling suite.

We've tested products from well-known bathroom cleaner brands such as Flash, Method, Cif, Dettol and more, as well as supermarket brands, to see how well they remove soap scum, limescale and general grime.

We've showered praise on some products, finding three Eco Buys that were remarkable at removing marks. We also thought one spray for under £1 did well at cleaning up vile tiles. However, there was also one Don't Buy product that didn't scrub up.

How we test bathroom cleaning sprays

Our lab tests each spray against tough bathroom grime.

Dirt and soap soils are left to dry on ceramic tiles for 24 hours. The cleaning spray is then applied to the tile and we assess how well the cleaning product breaks down the soil, and how clean the surface is before and after an automated scrubbing machine performs a set number of cleaning strokes. We repeat this test four times and record the average rating.

For the limescale test, we assess its ability to dissolve a Carrara marble slab by immersing it in the bathroom cleaner (limescale is mainly calcium carbonate, which is also present in marble). This test is run twice.

To simulate a vertical surface like a bathroom wall, the slab is placed in a vertical stand to allow the product to run off. We also assess how well the sprays handle limescale on a flat surface like the floor of a shower. In both instances, the bathroom cleaner is applied, rinsed off and the slab dried before assessing the descaling. We repeat this test five times.

What is its environmental impact?

We now examine the eco-credentials of each bathroom cleaning spray we test, so you can make an informed buying decision.

We look into the ingredients used and what their environmental impact is, including whether they are biodegradable, harmful to aquatic life or persistent (whether they are likely to accumulate and linger in waterways). We also consider how transparent manufacturers are about the ingredients they use.

We also take into account how easy the packaging is to recycle and how much information about recyclability is given on the packaging. We also check whether the packaging itself is made from recycled materials and/or whether it's refillable, as well as packaging utilisation (whether the packaging is under-filled, and thus wasteful).

Best Buys, Eco Buys and Great Value

To become a Which? recommended Best Buy, bathroom cleaners must score a minimum of 76%.

To become an Eco Buy, a bathroom cleaning spray must score a minimum of 75% and five stars for sustainability.

Great Value products are a selection of the cheapest products per 100ml that score 60% or above. Which? recommends these as a good choice for those who want to spend less, without sacrificing too much in the way of performance.

Buying sustainably isn't easy. It's difficult to find products that really make a difference and what's just greenwashing. Find out how choosing a Which? Eco Buy can help.
